Activated carbon filter is a commonly used water treatment equipment. As a pre-treatment of water treatment desalination system, it can adsorb residual chlorine that cannot be removed in the front-stage filtration, effectively ensure the service life of the back-stage equipment, improve the water quality of the effluent, and prevent pollution, especially prevent the free residual oxygen poisoning pollution of the back-stage reverse osmosis membrane, ion exchange resin, etc. At the same time, it also adsorbs pollutants such as small molecular organic matter leaked from the front stage, has a more obvious adsorption and removal effect on odor, colloids and pigments, heavy metal ions, etc. in water, and also has the effect of reducing COD. It can further reduce the SDI value of RO inlet water to ensure SDI <5 and TOC <2.0ppm.

1. Introduction to Quartz Sand Filter
Sand filter, also known as quartz sand filter, is also called mechanical filter, and its scientific name is shallow medium filter. It uses quartz sand as the filter medium. Under certain pressure conditions, water with high turbidity passes through a certain thickness of granular or non-granular quartz sand from top to bottom. Some suspended matter, organic matter, colloidal particles, microorganisms, chlorine, odor and some heavy metal ions in the water are trapped in the sand, and finally the purpose of reducing water turbidity and purifying water quality is achieved. Quartz sand filtration is one of the most effective means to remove suspended matter in water. It is an important unit in sewage deep treatment, sewage reuse and water supply treatment. It is mainly used for water treatment turbidity removal, softening water, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis pretreatment.
2. Working Principle
The adsorption of mechanical filters is a physical adsorption. According to the filling method of the filter material, it can be roughly divided into loose area (coarse sand) and compact area (fine sand). The suspended matter in the loose area mainly produces contact condensation through flow contact, so this area intercepts larger particles of suspended matter. In the compact area, it is mainly inertial collision and adsorption between suspended particles, so this area intercepts smaller particles of suspended matter.
When the mechanical filter affects its normal operation due to interception of excessive mechanical impurities, it can be cleaned by backwashing. Reverse water inlet and compressed air are introduced at the same time to scrub the air-water mixture to loosen the sand filter layer in the filter, so that the intercepted matter adhering to the surface of the quartz sand can be peeled off and taken away by the backwash water flow, which is conducive to removing sediment, suspended matter, etc. in the filter layer, and preventing the filter material from being compacted, so that it can fully restore its interception capacity, thereby achieving the purpose of cleaning.
3. Structural Features
The sand filter adopts a stainless steel operating valve group, and the filter start-up, forward washing, backwashing, and shutdown processes are all manually controlled.
The equipment body is a cylindrical steel structure with upper and lower elliptical heads. The filter is made of Q235-A or 304 stainless steel, lined with vulcanized rubber for corrosion protection. There is a water distributor at the water inlet inside, and a water collection device at the bottom. The water collection device is filled with 1400mm quartz sand. The body of the complete set of equipment is equipped with various control valves, flow meters, and pressure gauges. The filling material of the mechanical filter includes refined quartz sand.
